Hot on the heels of our massive v5.0.0 architecture overhaul, we are back with Spotube v5.1.0. If the previous release was about giving you control over your metadata, this update is all about giving you absolute control over your audio.

We've cracked the doors wide open for community-driven audio streaming, supercharged our download engine, and brought some highly requested mobile features straight to your desktop. Let's dive into what makes v5.1.0 a must-have upgrade.

1. Unlocked: Custom Audio-Source Plugins #

Why limit yourself to just YouTube or Piped? Version 5.1.0 introduces Custom Audio-Source Plugins.

  • Community-Powered Streaming: You can now add custom audio sources created by the community. If someone builds a backend for it, Spotube can stream from it.
  • Smarter UI: To make this seamless, the interface now displays plugin ability badges, filters plugins by what they can actually do, and automatically sets a plugin as your default if it's the only one installed. You can also easily designate your preferred default audio source in the settings.

2. NewPipe Arrives on Desktop #

For a long time, Android users have enjoyed the lightweight, privacy-friendly scraping power of NewPipe. We figured, why should mobile have all the fun? Spotube v5.1.0 brings official NewPipe support to Desktop platforms (Windows, macOS, and Linux), drastically expanding your reliable streaming options.

3. Buffering, Begone: Single Connection Streaming #

We have fundamentally changed how audio data is served to your device. By moving from chunked audio streaming to single connection streaming, playback is significantly more stable, less prone to random mid-track pauses, and lighter on network overhead.

4. Parallel Downloads for Blazing Fast Speed #

Your download manager just got a serious nitro boost. By implementing parallel chunked downloading, the app can now pull multiple pieces of a track simultaneously. The result? Dramatically faster download speeds, even on spotty connections.

🛠️ Notable Improvements & Bug Fixes #

We didn't just stop at the headline features. The team combed through the codebase to fix annoying bugs and optimize your day-to-day queue management:

  • Queue Batch Operations: Managing a massive play queue used to be a tedious task. Thanks to a brand-new multi-select feature, you can now perform bulk actions (like mass deleting or moving tracks) on your queue all at once.
  • Flac & DAB Music Support: Audiophiles rejoice! We've added support for uncompressed FLAC playback as well as DAB music sources for high-fidelity listening.
  • No More Tagless Downloads: Fixed a frustrating bug where downloaded tracks were missing their metadata tags. Now, your offline files will stay perfectly organized with proper artist, album, and track info.
  • Under-the-Hood Fixes: The "Play Next" queue bug has been ironed out, download directory pathing issues have been resolved, and Android users get a performance bump with new 16KB page size support.

🤝 Meet the Contributors #

Spotube thrives because brilliant people lend their time and talent to the project. We want to extend a massive welcome and thank you to our newest contributor:
